Eric Norton

I'm Eric and I do [and love] design! For as long as my memory stretches backwards, I have deeply enjoyed making things. This childhood playtime activity of mine has grown into a budding career path and I couldn't feel any more blessed and privileged than to get to be part of the creative world. The process and impact of art and design has always fascinated me and given me a kind of excitement and fulfillment that I have yet to find in anything else. As a young designer, I am always learning, always growing, always working, always striving to improve as an artist and as a person and always loving life and what I have chosen to do with it! Being a designer means I'm one of the lucky people that gets to do something extraordinary with my skills! I am truly thankful and I hope you enjoy browsing my portfolio!

KU + Ford: Paradigm Shift

This is innovation.

The University of Kansas partnered with Ford Motor Company to initiate a student-lead project where a collective group of Industrial designers, Engineers and Graphic designers were tasked with the re-thinking and re-designing of something that we all use numerous times everyday: the gear shift. This project involved heavy conceptualization and teamwork to produce, not just one, but three new and innovative models for the standard gear shifting mechanism. Usability, Functionality, Operability and Visual Aesthetic were all key components of the new-found ideas and a final package was produced and provided to Ford to showcase process and the final three deliverables.

This is your civic duty.

AIGA’s Get Out the Vote campaign invites designers to create nonpartisan posters and videos that inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote in the 2012 general election. Get Out the Vote, an AIGA Design for Democracy initiative, enables designers to engage in the public arena by contributing to a coordinated voter mobilization campaign. By motivating eligible citizens to register and turn out on election day, Get Out the Vote fulfills an ongoing AIGA objective of demonstrating the value of design to the public, public officials and business by providing a clear call to action for an activity that is important to everyone. Two posters were created for this campaign, one illustrative and one incorporating type and image.

This is your indulgence.

A spooky take on this age old holiday.  The gluttonous pilgrim struggles to resist temptation and lets his greedy ways overtake him. Being thankless can have dire consequences. The photography was manipulated to give an effect of coldness, lifelessness and disorientation. Conceptualization and modeling credit goes to Vance Fannin.

Blooms Taxonomy

INTERACTIVE | INFORMATION DESIGN

This is your work visualized.

Using the philosophies behind Bloom's Taxonomy we were tasked with displaying information regarding our academic projects in a visual manner by using a selected list of six Cognitive Learning Methods, five skill sets specific to design as well as four problem solving tactics and an additional level of information hierarchy of our choice. The solution developed to reach this goal manifested itself as an interactive poster where shapes were projected onto the blank grid space. Each project was assigned a unique shape in relation to the grid and when the two pieces were overlaid the information would translate. The projection of shapes would then cycle through each individual project morphing and changing depending on the use of each of the components of learning and creative thinking to create a uniquely animated display.

This is your chance to be heard.

Given the skill set designers from any background, there is ample opportunity to bring to light so many issues facing society. The chance to empower one's self to stand up for beliefs and convey deeply emotional and complex subject matter in a visual manner is a gift that should be utilized. The subject of marriage equality has been a heated debate for many years and still is an ever-present issue facing the people and the leaders of the United States. While there have been many strides towards providing equal benefits and rights to everyone lucky enough to live in such a freedom-oriented country..there is still much work to be done.

ILLUSTRATION

This is your research tool.

The University of Kansas Linguistics department was in need of a method of studying and analyzing student's perception of past, present and future tenses as they were related between the English language and other languages. A system of illustrations was developed where stimuli slides of characters performing specific activities were shown to students and, in turn, the students were asked to determine whether or not the associated sentence displayed with the image was in the correct tense. (For example: Is Kenny going to drink the juice or has he already drank the juice?) Stimuli Image Systems of this sort were developed for both Japanese and Spanish languages and were used in the university research experiments.

This is your design digest.

DSGN Magazine was a collaborative effort to compile a monthly-issued magazine targeted towards an audience of young and ambitious individuals who are either design enthusiasts or are seeking a career within the design realm. The magazine is divided into three departments: Live, Learn and Follow. "Live" houses information on successfully populating one's life with design inspiration by providing news updates, planned events, trends and product suggestions. "Learn" provides the reader with an unique chance to absorb knowledge involving the practice of design and information on career pathways to explore. And finally, "Follow" showcases established personalities and work already in existence who have much insight and advice to offer the young designer as he or she enters the field to start their own story.

INTERACTIVE DESIGN

This is your design on the go.

Taking work previously done for DSGN Magazine, the new challenge was to create a solution for which a printed piece of material could exist on a digital, and mobile, platform like an Ipad. The task was developing a way-finding and navigational system in which the user could easily maneuver through spreads and information just as if they were reading the tangible magazine. The application of the printed piece into this new platform revealed the obstacles one may need to overcome when making that transition while also revealing the opportunity of being able to add additional information hierarchy in the form of interactive devices and video/audio elements that the user wouldn't experience without the magazine existing on this new platform.
